Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia. Artwork of a man hearing non- existent womens voices. Auditory hallucinations are one of the most common symptoms of schizophrenia. One explanation for this disease is known as the dopamine hypothesis. Dopamine (the molecules at lower left & right) is a type of neurotransmitter. This chemical (tiny red spheres) is released from the ends (synapses) of nerve cells (neurons, upper left & right) when they pass on nerve impulses to other neurons. In schizophr- enia, however, the dopamine-producing neurons of the brain are overactive. This causes the sufferer to lose contact with reality, suffering from confused thoughts and emotional responses

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Schizophrenia" by Science Photo Library depicts the complex nature of this mental illness. The artwork portrays a man who is tormented by non-existent women's voices, representing one of the most common symptoms of schizophrenia - auditory hallucinations. The image delves into the scientific explanation behind this debilitating disorder, highlighting the dopamine hypothesis. In normal brain function, dopamine molecules (depicted as tiny red spheres) are released from nerve cells' synapses when transmitting impulses to other neurons. However, in individuals with schizophrenia, these dopamine-producing neurons become overactive. As a result of this chemical imbalance within the brain, sufferers lose touch with reality and experience confusion in their thoughts and emotional responses. This powerful visual representation emphasizes how schizophrenia can fragment an individual's perception and lead to a split personality or psychosis. Through its intricate details and thought-provoking imagery, this artwork sheds light on the profound impact that neurotransmitters like dopamine have on our mental well-being. It serves as a reminder of both the complexity of mental illnesses and the importance of understanding them to provide effective support for those affected.
