The first approach of the serpent engraving 1885

EDITORS COMMENTS
captures a pivotal moment in John Milton's epic poem, Paradise Lost. Engraved by Gustave Dore, this stunning print transports us to the heart of the battle between good and evil. As we gaze upon this vertical illustration, our eyes are immediately drawn to the menacing figure of the serpent slithering towards its unsuspecting prey. In this powerful depiction, Dore skillfully portrays the cunning strategy employed by Satan as he approaches Adam and Eve in their idyllic garden. The intricate details bring to life Milton's exploration of original sin and its consequences for humanity. We can almost feel the tension building as we witness these fateful events unfold. The presence of an angel hovering above adds an ethereal touch to the scene, symbolizing divine intervention and protection against evil forces. It serves as a reminder that even in our darkest moments, there is always hope for redemption. Dante's influence is also evident in Dore's work, with echoes of his Inferno resonating through every stroke. The snake itself becomes a metaphorical representation of temptation and one's struggle with inner demons. As we contemplate "The first approach of the serpent" we are reminded not only of biblical narratives but also how art has been used throughout history to explore profound religious themes. This print stands as a testament to both Gustave Dore's artistic prowess and John Milton's enduring literary legacy – inviting us into a world where heaven battles hell within each human
