EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is a section of the historic map "Americae Sive Novi Orbis Nova Descripto," which is part of the seminal work "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" created by the renowned Flemish cartographer Abraham Ortelius in 1572. The map represents the first modern and comprehensive presentation of the New World, as Europeans began to explore and colonize the Americas. Ortelius, born in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1527, was a pioneer in cartography and geography. He is considered the father of the modern atlas, having compiled and published the first modern atlas, "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum," which included over 53 maps. This map of America, created just a few decades after Columbus's voyages, reflects the limited knowledge Europeans had of the New World at the time. The map is a copper engraving, with intricate details hand-painted in watercolor. It showcases the known coastlines of North and South America, with various rivers, bays, and islands depicted. The map also includes several inscriptions, including the names of some indigenous tribes and European explorers, such as Hernando de Soto and Juan Ponce de Leon. The map's title, "Americae Sive Novi Orbis Nova Descripto," translates to "Description of America or the New World." The map's creation marked a significant milestone in the history of cartography and the European exploration of the New World. Today, it remains a fascinating testament to the curiosity, ingenuity, and adventurous spirit of the Renaissance era.
