EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the artwork "A running Ostrich" by renowned Italian Venetian painter and printmaker, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. Created in 1752-1753 as a chalk on paper study for the Africa section of frescoes in the Würzburg Residence, Germany, this piece is now housed at Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart, Germany. Tiepolo's artistic prowess extended beyond Italy to Germany and Spain where he was commissioned to adorn churches and palaces with his majestic frescoes. His talent earned him the prestigious position of President of the Academy of Padua. Alongside his grand-scale works, Tiepolo also excelled in etchings and oil paintings, solidifying his status as one of the most significant artists of his time. The illustration featured here is extracted from "The Drawings of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Volume II" authored by Detlev Baron Von Hadeln and published by The Pegasus Press in Paris during 1928. This particular image captures an ostrich caught mid-stride with remarkable detail and precision. With its monochrome palette emphasizing light and shadow, this artwork exemplifies Tiepolo's mastery over capturing movement within stillness. The graceful form of the ostrich is beautifully rendered against a stark background, showcasing both its elegance and power. As we admire this exquisite depiction captured through centuries-old techniques, we are reminded once again why Giovanni Battista Tiepolo remains an enduring figure in art history.
