EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Artist Travelling Wales February 10,1799" showcases a remarkable etching by Henri Merke. The artwork beautifully captures the essence of Wales during that time period, with its intricate details and hand coloring adding depth to the scene. Measuring at 13 3/16 x 15 1/2 inches (335 x 394 cm), this print transports viewers back in time to witness the picturesque beauty of Wales. The artist, a Swiss native from Niederweningen in Canton Zürich, was active between approximately 1760 and after 1820. Merke's talent shines through as he skillfully brings Thomas Rowlandson's original work to life. Rowlandson himself was a British artist based in London from 1757 until his passing in1827. During this period, protracted conflicts between Britain and France prevented many artists from exploring the continent. Instead, they turned their attention towards capturing the breathtaking vistas closer to home. This shift was encouraged by William Gilpin's influential book "Observations on the Relative Chiefly Picturesque Beauty" published in1786. As part of The Liszt Collection, this print offers art enthusiasts an opportunity to own a piece of history while appreciating Merke's exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail.
