Death Fights Against Humanity - A Timeless Battle for Life
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print by Boetius Adamsz. Bolswert, David Vinckboons, and Abraham Allard from 1610, we are transported into an allegorical world where Death himself wages a fierce battle against humanity. With his menacing scythe in hand and wings ready to take flight, Death personifies the inevitable end that awaits us all. As Father Time looks on with solemnity, an armed crowd of young and old, rich and poor men and women gather at the gate of life, desperately trying to defend themselves against Death's relentless assault. Arrows fly through the air as Fame (Fama) watches from above with her trumpet raised high. Amidst this chaos, science is not spared either. The globe and compass lay shattered on the ground as Death takes aim at knowledge itself. Even mighty elephants fall victim to his power. The Latin verse accompanying this artwork speaks volumes about the human condition - our constant struggle against mortality and our futile attempts to dislodge death's grip on life. Quint Lox has masterfully captured the essence of this profound piece from Liszt Collection. It serves as a poignant reminder that no matter how hard we fight or what tools we possess relating to arts or sciences; in the end, death conquers all.
