EDITORS COMMENTS
Augustus of Prima Porta: A Symbol of Roman Triumph and Imperial Power This stunning white marble statue, known as the Augustus of Prima Porta, is a testament to the greatness of Augustus Caesar (63 BC-14 AD), the first emperor of the Roman Empire. Dated to the 1st century AD, this masterpiece was discovered in 1506 in the Villa dei Quintili, near the modern town of Castel Gandolfo, Italy. Augustus is depicted in military attire, wearing an armored cuirass adorned with intricate relief carvings. The most notable of these carvings is the allegorical scene on the breastplate, which illustrates the return of the Roman legionary eagles lost to Parthia under Mark Antony (40s BC) and Crassus (53 BC). This symbolized Augustus' restoration of Rome's military might and prestige. Augustus' hairstyle, featuring a short, curly beard and a high, swept-back haircut, is reminiscent of the traditional Roman military commander's attire. His head is crowned with a laurel wreath, a symbol of victory and honor. Augustus is shown standing tall and proud, with one hand holding a patera, a shallow bowl used for libations, and the other hand resting on a globe, symbolizing his role as the ruler of the known world. The figure of Mars, the Roman god of war, is depicted on the globe, emphasizing Augustus' connection to the military and his divine authority. The Augustus of Prima Porta is a powerful representation of the first emperor's military achievements, divine status, and imperial power. It is now on display at the Chiaramonti Museum in the Vatican Museums in Vatican City, a must-see destination for anyone interested in ancient Roman history and art.
