EDITORS COMMENTS
This caricature, created in 1882, immortalizes the moment of triumph for three prominent figures of the Victorian theatre world: Alfred W. Pinero (left, 1855-1934), John Hare (centre, 1844-1921), and William Hunter Kendal (right, 1843-1917), as they toast the success of Pinero's play, "The Squire," at St. James's Theatre in London. The play, which opened in 1884, was based on the controversial plot of Thomas Hardy's novel, "Far From the Madding Crowd." Pinero, an acclaimed dramatist and writer, is depicted with a mischievous grin, holding a glass of champagne. John Hare, the actor and theatrical manager, is seen in the middle, with a proud and satisfied expression. William Hunter Kendal, another actor, completes the trio, raising his glass in a toast to their collective achievement. The controversy surrounding the similarities between "The Squire" and Hardy's novel helped to boost ticket sales, adding to the excitement and intrigue surrounding the production. Despite the allegations of plagiarism, Pinero's play was a hit, solidifying his reputation as a talented and innovative playwright. This caricature, a testament to the camaraderie and success of these three men in the theatre world, captures the spirit of the 1880s and the intrigue that often surrounded the world of Victorian drama.
