EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the Lackey moth, Malacosoma neustria, also known as Phalaena neustria or Malacosoma castrense. The image was created by the skilled hand of Johann Carl Bock for Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers' seminal work, "Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur," published in Erlangen in 1786. The Lackey moth is a beautiful member of the Lepidoptera order, with its distinctive orange and black wings adorned with intricate patterns. The Lackey moth undergoes a remarkable metamorphosis, transforming from a caterpillar, or larva, into a pupa, and finally into an adult moth. The caterpillar, not shown in this engraving, is characterized by its green body with white stripes and a distinctive orange head. Once the caterpillar has completed its development, it forms a pupa, or chrysalis, which allows the transformation into the adult moth to occur. The Lackey moth is native to Europe and Asia, and is commonly found in woodlands and gardens. Its larvae feed on a variety of plants, including oak, willow, and poplar. The adult moths are attracted to flowers, particularly those with strong fragrances, and play an essential role in pollination. This engraving is a testament to the beauty and intricacy of the natural world, as well as the skill and artistry of Johann Carl Bock and Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers. It provides a glimpse into the past, offering a window into the world of entomology and the fascination with the natural world that has endured for centuries.
