EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the Pale Oak Eggar, Trichiura crataegi, a hermaphroditic moth belonging to the family Notodontidae. The image, created by the skilled hand of Johann Friedrich Volckart, is taken from Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers' seminal work, "Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur," published in Erlangen in 1786. The Pale Oak Eggar, also known as the Oak Eggar or the Dodonaea Moth, is native to Europe and Asia. The moth's wingspan measures around 5 centimeters, and its wings are characterized by their pale, almost translucent appearance, with intricate patterns of darker veins and speckles. The moth's caterpillar, which is not shown in this engraving, is known to feed on various species of oak trees, as well as on Dodonaea and Drymonia. The metamorphosis of the Pale Oak Eggar is a fascinating process. After hatching from its egg, the caterpillar undergoes several stages of growth, shedding its skin multiple times in the process. Eventually, it forms a pupa, which transforms into an adult moth through a process of metamorphosis. This engraving is a testament to the intricate beauty of the natural world and the meticulous attention to detail that was employed by naturalists and artists during the 18th century. The Pale Oak Eggar, with its delicate wings and intricate patterns, is a reminder of the wonders that can be found in even the smallest of creatures.
