EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Princess Daisy of Pless and her sister, the Duchess of Westminster, gracefully ride camels in front of the iconic Sphinx during their travels in Egypt in 1912. The sisters, both members of the European aristocracy, are dressed in elegant clothing suitable for the desert climate, with wide-brimmed hats shielding them from the sun. The backdrop of the ancient pyramids and the Sphinx, two of Egypt's most famous landmarks, adds a sense of grandeur and adventure to the scene. The sisters' visit to Egypt was part of a larger tour of Europe and the Middle East, which was a popular form of travel for the wealthy and aristocratic classes during that era. Tourism was still in its infancy, and travel to exotic destinations like Egypt was seen as a status symbol and a way to broaden one's horizons. The Pyramids of Giza, which can be seen in the background of the photograph, are some of the most famous structures in the world and have been a source of fascination for travelers and historians for centuries. Built over 4,500 years ago, they are a testament to the ancient Egyptian civilization and its engineering prowess. The sisters' relaxed and confident demeanor as they ride the camels in front of the Sphinx speaks to their confidence and adventurous spirit. The photograph captures a moment in time when travel was still an exciting and novel experience, and the wonders of the ancient world were still waiting to be discovered. This image is a reminder of the rich history and cultural exchange that has taken place throughout the centuries, and the enduring allure of travel and exploration. It is a testament to the power of photography to transport us to another time and place, and to remind us of the beauty and wonder of the world around us.
