Aral Sea, satellite image, 2000

Aral Sea, satellite image. Image 3 of 3. North is at top. This inland lake is found between Uzbekistan (west) and Kazakhstan (east) and used to be the fourth largest lake in the world. Since the 1960s, it has lost more than half of its volume. This is due to overuse of the feeder rivers (the Syr Darya and Amu Darya) in irrigation of cotton and paddy fields. Image taken by Landsats multispectral scanner instrument on 29th July 2000. For a series showing the lakes progressive shrinkage, see images E590/289 - E590/291

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Aral Sea, once a majestic inland lake nestled between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Taken by Landsats multispectral scanner instrument on July 29th, 2000, this satellite image reveals the shocking transformation of the Aral Sea over time. Once considered the fourth largest lake in the world, this geographical wonder has suffered immensely since the 1960s. Overuse of its feeder rivers for irrigation purposes, primarily to support cotton and paddy fields, has resulted in more than half of its volume being lost. The consequences are evident as we witness its receding shores and drying expanse. The image highlights not only the environmental impact but also underscores human influence on our planet's delicate ecosystems. As water loss continues due to evaporation and drainage, salt deposits accumulate along with brackish sediment beds. This haunting depiction serves as a stark reminder of industrialization's toll on nature. It symbolizes an arid desertification process that threatens not only local communities but also global awareness about sustainable practices. As we observe this desolate landscape from space through Earth observation technology, it becomes clear that urgent action is needed to address these issues before irreversible damage occurs. Let us reflect upon this powerful image and strive towards preserving our precious natural resources for future generations.
