Bony spurs in neck, X-ray

Bony spurs in neck, coloured X-ray. Bony spurs (osteophytes, left) grow from the vertebrae as a normal part of the aging process. They stabilise the spine when the discs of cartilage between the vertebrae shrink and become less flexible. Spur growth is called cervical spondylosis. It is found in 25-50% of 50-year-olds and at least 70% of 75-year-olds. It may not cause any problem at all. However, it can lead to various conditions including stiffness of the neck, painful trapped nerves (radiculopathy), and cervical spondylitic myelopathy, where the spinal cord is compressed, leading to a loss of sensation and muscle control in the limbs

EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured X-ray print showcases bony spurs in the neck, a common occurrence as part of the natural aging process. As we grow older, these osteophytes or bone growths emerge from the vertebrae to provide stability to the spine when the cartilage discs between them shrink and lose flexibility. This phenomenon is known as cervical spondylosis. Cervical spondylosis affects a significant portion of individuals over 50 years old, with prevalence rates ranging from 25-50%. By age 75, at least 70% of people will have developed this condition. While some may not experience any issues due to bony spurs, others may face various complications such as stiffness in the neck or trapped nerves causing radiculopathy. In more severe cases, cervical spondylitic myelopathy can occur when these bony growths compress the spinal cord. This compression leads to a loss of sensation and muscle control in the limbs. This image serves as a reminder that our bodies change with time and that conditions like arthritis can affect even our bones. It highlights how medical professionals utilize radiography techniques to diagnose and understand disorders related to joints, bones, and aging processes.
