Calcitonin hormone

Calcitonin. Polarized light micrograph of crystals of the hormone calcitonin. Calcitonin is produced by the thyroid gland and helps to control the level of calcium in the blood. It slows the rate at which calcium and phosphate are lost from the bones. Insufficient production of calcitonin causes Pagets disease in which bone formation is disrupted and the bones become weakened, thickened and deformed. A synthetic form of calcitonin is used to treat the condition. Magnification: x120 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of calcitonin hormone crystals under polarized light. Produced by the thyroid gland, calcitonin plays a crucial role in regulating calcium levels within the bloodstream. By slowing down the loss of calcium and phosphate from bones, it helps maintain their strength and integrity. However, when insufficient amounts of calcitonin are produced, a condition known as Paget's disease can occur. This debilitating disorder disrupts bone formation, leading to weakened, thickened, and deformed bones. Fortunately, medical science has developed a synthetic form of calcitonin that is used to effectively treat this condition. At a magnification of x120 on a 6x7cm size print, this image offers an up-close view into the world of biochemistry and compounds. The crystal structure of calcitonin hormone is beautifully revealed through polarized light microscopy techniques. Science Photo Library brings us yet another stunning visual representation that not only highlights the scientific significance but also captivates our aesthetic senses. This photograph serves as a reminder of both the delicate intricacies found within nature's biochemical processes and how advancements in medicine continue to improve lives affected by complex conditions like Paget's disease.
