DNA fingerprinting

DNA fingerprinting used to analyse family relationships. The photo shows an X-ray (or autoradiograph) of bands of DNA produced by the technique of electrophoresis in an agarose gel. The pattern of these DNA bands is unique to each individual, but some bands are shared by related people, such as a parent & child. DNA fingerprints can be used to prove conclusively whether people are related. The bands in these DNA fingerprints are marked M for mother, C for child, F for father. DNA fingerprinting for family identificat- ion has numerous applications, including cases of disputed paternity, or where immigrants to a country need to prove a family relationship

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the fascinating world of DNA fingerprinting, a groundbreaking technique used to unravel intricate family relationships. The image captures an X-ray or autoradiograph that vividly displays bands of DNA generated through electrophoresis in an agarose gel. Each individual possesses a unique pattern of these DNA bands, akin to their genetic signature. However, certain bands are shared among relatives, such as parents and children, enabling conclusive proof of kinship. DNA fingerprints have revolutionized the field of family identification by providing irrefutable evidence regarding biological connections. In this particular snapshot, the labeled bands highlight the roles played by different individuals: M for mother, C for child, and F for father. This visual representation serves as a powerful tool in cases involving disputed paternity or situations where immigrants must substantiate familial ties when entering a new country. The applications of DNA fingerprinting extend far beyond its role in resolving family disputes. It has become an indispensable asset in various fields including forensic investigations, medical research, and genetic studies. By unlocking the secrets hidden within our double helix structure through advanced biochemistry and biotechnology techniques like sequencing and autoradiography seen here – scientists continue to push boundaries and uncover invaluable insights into human genetics. This awe-inspiring print from Science Photo Library encapsulates both the beauty and significance behind DNA fingerprinting's contribution to scientific progress without mentioning any commercial use associated with it.
