False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of secreting gastric glands of the stomach. Gastric glands occur as downgrowths of the stomach epithe- lium, forming pits (seen here). From the base of these pits, specialized cells produce digestive enzymes, acid and hormones. The wide diameter of these pits suggest that they are active and secreting. The surface epithelium of simple columnar cells around the mouth of these pits, produces mucous. Copious amounts of mucous are needed and a thick gastric lining, to protect the stomach while chemicals act to digest the food within it. Magnification: x50 at 6x7cm size.
