EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a fascinating artwork from the 17th century, depicting three distinct nose types in profile: small, medium, and large. Published as part of a study on physiognomy, an ancient practice that aimed to decipher personality traits based on one's appearance, this illustration offers a glimpse into the historical understanding of human anatomy. Originally featured in Giambattista della Porta's renowned book "On Human Physiognomy" in 1586, this particular version hails from the Italian edition released in 1615. Della Porta was an esteemed Italian scholar who delved into various scientific disciplines during his lifetime (c. 1535-1615). His work encompassed exploring the intricacies of facial features and their potential correlation with individual characteristics. The monochrome image captures the trio of noses with remarkable detail and precision. It serves as a testament to the meticulousness prevalent during that era when studying anatomical aspects was highly regarded. The comparison between different nasal shapes and sizes provides valuable insights into how physical attributes were once believed to reflect inner qualities. As we admire this historical gem preserved by MIDDLE TEMPLE LIBRARY/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, we are reminded of humanity's perpetual quest for knowledge and our ever-evolving understanding of ourselves through art and science alike.
