The Second Western Party at Cape Geology on Christmas Day, 1911, (1913). Artist: Frank Debenham

The Second Western Party at Cape Geology, Granite Harbour, on Christmas Day, 1911 (Forde and Gran standing, Debenham and Taylor sitting), (1913). Petty officer Robert Forde, ski expert Tryggve Gran, geologist Frank Debenham holding the string of the camera shutter release, and fellow geologist T Griffith Taylor. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

The Second Western Party at Cape Geology on Christmas Day, 1911

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print captured by artist Frank Debenham in 1913. The image showcases the camaraderie and determination of the final expedition led by British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. In the photograph, we see Petty Officer Robert Forde and ski expert Tryggve Gran standing tall, while geologist Frank Debenham and fellow geologist T Griffith Taylor sit beside them. Debenham holds the string of the camera shutter release, symbolizing his role as both a scientist and documenter of this historic journey. The Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913) aimed to continue scientific research initiated during Scott's previous Discovery Expedition to Antarctica. Alongside geologists, the team included experts in various fields such as zoology, surgery, photography, engineering, skiing expertise, meteorology, and physics. Scott's ultimate goal was to be the first person to reach the South Pole. However, upon their arrival on January 17th, 1912, they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them by a month. Trapped by blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey from the Pole, Scott and his remaining team members tragically perished in late March. Their bodies were found eight months later along with their poignant diaries which revealed their heroic struggle for survival against nature's harsh forces. This remarkable photograph serves as a testament to these brave explorers' spirit of adventure and dedication to scientific exploration amidst treacherous conditions in one of Earth's most unforgiving environments.
