EDITORS COMMENTS
Elizabeth of Hungary, also known as Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, was born in 1207 in the Kingdom of Hungary. She was the eldest daughter of King Andrew II and Gertrude the Babenberg of Austria. At the age of 14, Elizabeth was married to Landgrave Louis IV of Thuringia in Germany. The marriage was happy, and Elizabeth was known for her deep piety and charitable works. After Louis's death in 1227, Elizabeth chose to live a life of poverty and devotion, becoming one of the first members of the newly-founded Third Order of St. Francis. This enchanting colored engraving captures the essence of Elizabeth's spiritual journey. The image shows Elizabeth in her Franciscan robes, holding a flower in her hand, symbolizing her humility and purity. Her aura or halo, a common symbol of sainthood, surrounds her head, signifying her holiness. Elizabeth's crown and the royal insignia on her robe remind us of her noble heritage. Elizabeth's life was marked by her unwavering faith and her commitment to serving the poor and needy. She spent her days caring for the sick and the destitute, and her nights in prayer and meditation. Elizabeth's charitable works earned her the admiration of her people and the respect of the Church. In 1231, at the young age of 24, Elizabeth died of the plague. She was canonized in 1235, and her relics were later transferred to Marburg, Germany, where they remain to this day. Elizabeth of Hungary is revered as a patron saint of the poor, the sick, and the needy, and her legacy continues to inspire generations of Christians.
