EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, two de Havilland DH.114 Riley Heron 2 aircraft, N14146 (msn 14146) and N19D (msn 14109), are seen parked at Wichita Falls Municipal Airport in Texas. These Heron 2s were originally built as utility aircraft for de Havilland, but were later converted to the Riley Heron 2 configuration and fitted with Lycoming IO-540 engines. The DH.114 Heron, also known as the Riley Heron in its later form, was a versatile twin-engine aircraft designed by de Havilland in the late 1950s. It was originally intended for use as a utility aircraft, but its versatility and reliability soon saw it adopted for a variety of roles, including passenger transport, cargo carrying, and even as a flying laboratory for scientific research. In this image, we see two examples of the Riley Heron 2 variant, which were operated by King Airlines. The conversion to the Riley Heron 2 configuration involved the installation of larger wings and tail surfaces, as well as the new Lycoming engines, which increased the aircraft's performance and capabilities. The photograph captures the rugged and utilitarian character of these aircraft, with their bare metal fuselages and simple, functional livery. The setting at Wichita Falls Municipal Airport adds to the sense of adventure and exploration, with the open sky and expansive landscape beyond the aircraft hinting at the vast distances that these Herons were capable of covering. Circa 1970, this photograph offers a glimpse into a bygone era of aviation, when small, versatile aircraft like the DH.114 Heron played a crucial role in connecting communities and exploring new frontiers.
