EDITORS COMMENTS
This charming photograph captures a moment of joy and innocence in the midst of the tumultuous events of World War I. Taken in September 1916, the image shows the three daughters of Major and Mrs. Percy H.G. Powell-Cotton, Elizabeth Worthington, Diana Powell-Cotton, and Antoinette Powell-Cotton, along with a friend, playing in the garden of Quex Park. The Powell-Cotton family resided in Quex Park, where they opened the Quex Park VAD Hospital on October 15, 1914. Run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment, the hospital provided medical care to soldiers injured in the war. The Commandant was Hannah Powell-Cotton, wife of Major Powell-Cotton. The hospital remained operational until its closure on January 31, 1919. In this photograph, the children seem oblivious to the hardships and sacrifices being made during the war, as they enjoy a sunny day in the garden. Elizabeth Worthington, the eldest daughter, was the daughter of Dr. Worthington, the VAD's Medical Officer and Birchington GP. Diana Powell-Cotton, born in 1908, went on to become an author and broadcaster. Antoinette Powell-Cotton, born in 1913, became a renowned botanical artist. Mary Powell-Cotton, the youngest, was born in 1910. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the resilience and strength of families during times of war and the importance of finding moments of joy amidst adversity.
