Blue-green alga, Spirulina platensis

False colour transmission electron micrograph of the blue-green algae, Spirulina platensis. Here, a single cell of this species is seen. Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) are primitive algae. Their internal structure is closely related to bacteria. They are prokaryotic organisms which contain no membrane-bound nucleus; instead, as in bacteria, their nuclear material is dispersed throughout the cell. Photosynthetic lamellae (thread-like structures) are the primitive equivalent of chloroplasts. The red spots are food reserves known as cyanophycin granules. Some Spirulina species are eaten as a protein-rich health food. Magnification: x6660 at 6x4.5cm size. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the intricate beauty of Spirulina platensis, a blue-green alga that belongs to the primitive cyanobacteria family. The false color transmission electron micrograph reveals a single cell of this species, providing a glimpse into its fascinating internal structure. Similar to bacteria, these prokaryotic organisms lack a membrane-bound nucleus and disperse their nuclear material throughout the cell. The thread-like structures visible in the image are photosynthetic lamellae, which serve as the algae's primitive version of chloroplasts. These structures play a crucial role in capturing sunlight for photosynthesis, enabling Spirulina platensis to thrive in various aquatic environments. One cannot help but be captivated by the vibrant red spots scattered within the cell - these are food reserves known as cyanophycin granules. They represent an essential source of sustenance for this remarkable organism. Beyond its scientific significance, some species of Spirulina are consumed as protein-rich health food due to their nutritional value. This print not only highlights nature's incredible diversity but also serves as a reminder that even microscopic organisms can have profound impacts on our lives. With magnification at x6660 and presented at 6x4.5cm size, this stunning image from Science Photo Library offers us an extraordinary opportunity to appreciate and marvel at the wonders hidden within our natural world.
