Greetings Card : DNA fingerprint autoradiograms
Cards from Science Photo Library
DNA fingerprint autoradiograms
Gene mapping. Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) autorad- iograms prepared as part of gene mapping studies. Banding patterns on the autoradiogram form a genetic fingerprint. The banding pattern shows the sequence of base pairs that form the code for a section of DNA. A sample of DNA has been cut into fragments by an enzyme and marked with a radioactive tag for sequencing. The DNA fragments are then separated by electrophoresis in an agarose gel, moving different distances along the gel according to size. The resulting banding pattern is preserved on X-ray film to produce this autoradiogram

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of gene mapping through DNA fingerprint autoradiograms. In this scientific marvel, we witness the beauty and complexity of Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) as it reveals its secrets through banding patterns on an autoradiogram. These patterns form a unique genetic fingerprint, unraveling the sequence of base pairs that encode a specific section of DNA. To create this mesmerizing image, a sample of DNA is meticulously cut into fragments by an enzyme and labeled with a radioactive tag for sequencing. These tagged fragments are then separated using electrophoresis in an agarose gel, each fragment moving different distances along the gel based on their size. The resulting banding pattern is captured on X-ray film to produce this stunning autoradiogram. Within this laboratory setting, scientists delve into the depths of biochemistry and genetics to unlock nature's blueprint. This photograph represents not only cutting-edge biotechnology but also countless hours spent in pursuit of knowledge and discovery. Through DNA research and sequencing autoradiograms like these, scientists gain invaluable insights into our genetic makeup, paving the way for advancements in medicine, forensics, and understanding human evolution. It serves as a testament to humanity's relentless curiosity about life itself - decoding one strand at a time.
