Greetings Card : Illustration of intestinal villi
Cards from Science Photo Library
Illustration of intestinal villi
Illustration of intestinal villi. These are minute finger-like projections found on the lining of the small intestine. Their role is food absorption. Each villus contains a lymph vessel (white) and a network of blood capillaries (red and blue). Tall columnar cells on the surface epithelium absorb food that passes over the villi. This food in turn passes into the blood circulation. Found at the base of villi are indentations called Crypts of Lieberkuhn. These crypts produce the cells that go to make up each villus. At bottom can be seen other muscle layers of the intestinal wall. Villi are largest and most numerous in the duodenum and jejunum, where most food absorption occurs

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate and fascinating world of intestinal villi. These delicate finger-like projections, found on the lining of the small intestine, play a crucial role in food absorption within our bodies. Each villus is a complex structure housing a network of blood capillaries colored in vibrant red and blue, alongside a lymph vessel depicted in white. The tall columnar cells that cover the surface epithelium are responsible for absorbing nutrients from the passing food particles. As these nutrients are absorbed, they enter into the bloodstream through this intricate system of blood vessels present within each villus. At the base of these remarkable structures lie indentations known as Crypts of Lieberkuhn. These crypts serve as factories producing new cells that contribute to building up each individual villus. In this awe-inspiring artwork by Science Photo Library, we can also observe other muscle layers at the bottom which make up the intestinal wall. It is worth noting that while villi exist throughout our intestines, they reach their largest size and highest numbers in both duodenum and jejunum – two sections where most food absorption takes place. This image provides us with an extraordinary glimpse into one aspect of our digestive system's complexity – highlighting its incredible ability to efficiently extract vital nutrients from ingested food.
