Greetings Card : Martian topography
Cards from Science Photo Library
Martian topography
Martian topography. Three-dimensional map of the topography of Mars. Elevation is colour-coded, from white (highest) through red, yellow and green to blue (lowest). At far left is Olympus Mons (white), the largest volcano in the solar system. To the right of this are three other volcanoes on the Tharsis Ridge. From bottom to top these are: Arsia Mons, Pavonis Mons and Ascraeus Mons. The deep valley running right from centre is Valles Marineris, which extends over 5000 kilometres. Data collected by the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) on the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft. 27 million height measurements were made by timing laser pulses sent to Mars surface

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print showcases the intricate and captivating Martian topography, revealing a three-dimensional map of the Red Planet. The image is color-coded to represent elevation, with white indicating the highest points and blue representing the lowest areas. At the far left stands Olympus Mons, an awe-inspiring volcano that holds the title for being the largest in our entire solar system. Moving towards the right, we encounter three other prominent volcanoes situated on Tharsis Ridge: Arsia Mons, Pavonis Mons, and Ascraeus Mons. These towering structures contribute to Mars' unique landscape and offer a glimpse into its volcanic history. However, what truly captures one's attention is Valles Marineris – a deep valley stretching over 5000 kilometers from center stage. This colossal geological feature dominates this Martian scene as it carves its way through the planet's surface. The data used to create this remarkable visualization was collected by Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) aboard NASA's Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft. Through precise timing of laser pulses directed at Mars' surface, MOLA gathered an astounding 27 million height measurements. This extraordinary print not only appeals to astronomy enthusiasts but also serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge about our neighboring planets in our vast universe.
