Greetings Card : Physical weathering
Cards from Science Photo Library
Physical weathering
Physical weathering. Large boulders of igneous rock shaped by weathering. Weathering is the denudation of rock by a variety of physical processes. Here, traces of water have reacted with mineral veins in the rock to weaken it, and the thermal expansion and contraction of these hydrated minerals has loosened the rock further (exfoliation). This leaves the rock vulnerable to erosion by wind. Photographed in the Namib Desert, Africa

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the remarkable process of physical weathering in action. In the vast and arid landscape of the Namib Desert, Africa, large boulders of igneous rock stand as silent witnesses to nature's relentless forces. Over time, these rocks have been shaped and transformed by a variety of physical processes. Traces of water have seeped into mineral veins within the rock, initiating a chemical reaction that weakens its structure. As temperatures fluctuate in this harsh environment, thermal expansion and contraction occur within these hydrated minerals, causing them to expand and contract repeatedly. This phenomenon known as exfoliation further loosens the rock's grip on itself. Exposed and vulnerable, these weakened boulders are now at the mercy of wind erosion. The constant gusts carry away tiny particles bit by bit until only remnants remain. It is a testament to both the power and patience of nature. This stunning image not only showcases the intricate beauty created through geological processes but also serves as a reminder that even seemingly indestructible formations can succumb to Earth's ever-changing elements. Through this lens provided by Science Photo Library, we gain insight into our planet's dynamic history while marveling at its ability to shape landscapes over millions of years.
