EDITORS COMMENTS
This 17th century print depicts the legendary moment from Greek mythology when the sun god Apollo, portrayed as a regal figure with a laurel wreath and lyre, bestows his magnificent chariot upon Phaeton. The young man, eager and excited, reaches out to grasp the reins, as Apollo gestures towards him with a reassuring hand. Surrounding them, the four seasons are represented by allegorical figures: Winter with a cornucopia of frozen fruits, Spring with a bouquet of flowers, Summer with grapes and Autumn with a sheaf of wheat. The scene is reminiscent of the painting by Nicolas Poussin, "Apollo Delivering His Chariot to Phaeton," which is renowned for its masterful use of color and composition. This print, with its intricate details and rich symbolism, is a testament to the enduring legacy of Poussin and the French artistic school. Housed in one of the Paris museums, such as the Petit Palais, it continues to inspire and captivate audiences, inviting us to explore the mythological world of gods and goddesses, and the timeless themes of heritage, literature, and religion.
