Drainage Work near a Railroad Bridge, 1900-1904. Creator: Unknown
Drainage Work near a Railroad Bridge, 1900-1904. In the second half of the 19th century, Russia underwent a period of extensive rail development that culminated in the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railroad. Akin to the great railroads to the Pacific in both the United States and Canada, Russia's transcontinental line was intended to supply and populate Siberia as well as deliver raw materials to the rapidly developing industries west of the Urals. This photograph is from an album of 56 photographs in the Collection of Documentary Materials on the History of the West-Siberian Railroad (1890s-1978) in the Novosibirsk Oblast State Archive. The album documents the construction of this part of the line, focusing on the engineers and workmen building tunnels and trestles along the route. The album was digitized for the Meeting of Frontiers digital library project in the early 2000s. Iz fotoal'boma "Al'bom postroek i vidov krugobai?kal'skoi? zheleznoi? dorogi. 1900-1904 g.". EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intense drainage work being carried out near a railroad bridge in Russia between 1900-1904. During this period, Russia was undergoing a significant rail development phase, with the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railroad being a major highlight. Similar to the great transcontinental railroads in North America, Russia's ambitious project aimed to connect and supply Siberia while facilitating the transportation of raw materials to industries west of the Urals.
The image is part of an album housed in the Novosibirsk Oblast State Archive, showcasing 56 photographs documenting the construction of this crucial railway line. The focus is on engineers and laborers diligently working on building tunnels and trestles along the route. This historical documentation offers a glimpse into the challenges and triumphs faced by those involved in such monumental infrastructure projects.
Digitized for preservation and accessibility through digital library initiatives like Meeting of Frontiers, this photograph serves as a valuable record of Russian industrial history. It stands as a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance in overcoming geographical obstacles to connect distant regions through modern transportation networks.
