Face of a Glacier in Victoria Land, c1911, (1913). Artist: G Murray Levick
Face of a Glacier in Victoria Land, c1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Face of a Glacier in Victoria Land, c1911" captures the awe-inspiring beauty and treacherous nature of the Antarctic landscape. Taken by artist G Murray Levick during Captain Robert Falcon Scott's final expedition, it serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and determination displayed by these brave explorers. The Terra Nova Expedition, which took place from 1910 to 1913, was an ambitious scientific endeavor led by Scott. With a diverse team comprising geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists, and physicists among others; they aimed to continue their research while also striving to be the first to reach the South Pole. However, upon reaching their destination on January 17th, 1912; Scott and his companions were met with crushing disappointment as they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them there just weeks earlier. Trapped by blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey; Scott and his remaining team members tragically perished at the end of March. It wasn't until eight months later that their bodies were found along with their diaries - testaments to their unwavering spirit even in the face of insurmountable odds. This photograph is part of "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume II published in London in 1913. As we gaze upon this image today with hindsight knowledge of its tragic outcome; let us remember these courageous individuals who pushed boundaries for scientific discovery amidst unforgiving conditions.
