EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 16th century engraving, titled "The Judgment of Paris," is a masterpiece by the renowned Italian engraver Marcantonio Raimondi. The print depicts the legendary story of Paris, a Trojan prince, who was tasked with choosing the fairest goddess among Venus, Juno, and Pallas Athena. Paris is shown seated at the left of the image, with Venus, the goddess of love, offering him the apple of desire. Juno, the goddess of marriage and Hera, the queen of the gods, is depicted to the right, each attempting to bribe Paris with offers of power and wealth. Above Paris, a winged Victory holds the scales, symbolizing the balance of power in the decision Paris is about to make. In the upper section of the print, the Sun in his chariot is preceded by Castor and Pollux on horseback, representing the Dioscuri, the twin brothers of Greek mythology. At the lower right, two river gods and a naiad are shown, while Jupiter, in the form of an eagle, looks on from above. Other deities, including Ganymede, Diana, and another goddess, are also depicted. The intricate details of the engraving showcase the skill and artistry of Marcantonio Raimondi, who was a leading figure in the development of the printmaking technique in Italy during the 16th century. The print is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Italian Renaissance and continues to be an important work in the history of art.
