A Regal Legacy - The Romanov Dynasty of Russia, 1672-1917
EDITORS COMMENTS
This double-page spread from The Graphic, published in 1896, showcases a stunning collection of portraits of the Russian Czars and Czarinas, or Tsars and Tsarinas, as they were also known, from the founding of the Romanov Dynasty by Peter the Great in 1672 until the reign of Alexander III, who died in 1894. Peter the Great, the first Czar depicted, is shown in a grand, full-length portrait, wearing a military uniform and holding a sword. His successor, Catherine I, the first woman to rule Russia as a monarch, is portrayed in a more intimate setting, seated and dressed in elegant robes. The following pages reveal a succession of powerful rulers, including the infamous Ivan the Terrible, Paul I, and Alexander III. The Romanov family tree unfolds before us, revealing the intricate web of alliances, marriages, and successions that defined Russian history for over three centuries. Each portrait captures the unique character and essence of the individual monarch, from the stern gaze of Peter the Great to the gentle, maternal expression of Catherine II. The final portraits in this spread depict Alexander III and his family, including his son and heir, Nicholas II. Alexander III's reign marked a return to autocratic rule, and his son's reign would tragically end with the Bolshevik Revolution and the fall of the Romanov Dynasty in 1917. This collection of portraits offers a glimpse into the rich history of Russia's imperial past, showcasing the strength, resilience, and complexity of the Romanov rulers. From Peter the Great to Nicholas II, the Romanovs left an indelible mark on Russian history, shaping the course of the nation for generations to come.
