This double-page spread from The Graphic, published in 1896, showcases a stunning collection of portraits of the Russian Czars and Czarinas, or Tsars and Tsarinas, as they were also known, from the founding of the Romanov Dynasty by Peter the Great in 1672 until the reign of Alexander III, who died in 1894. Peter the Great, the first Czar depicted, is shown in a grand, full-length portrait, wearing a military uniform and holding a sword. His successor, Catherine I, the first woman to rule Russia as a monarch, is portrayed in a more intimate setting, seated and dressed in elegant robes. The following pages reveal a succession of powerful rulers, including the infamous Ivan the Terrible, Paul I, and Alexander III. The Romanov family tree unfolds before us, revealing the intricate web of alliances, marriages, and successions that defined Russian history for over three centuries.
