EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Johann Carl Bock after Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers' Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur (Butterflies and Moths Represented in Pictures According to Nature), published in Erlangen in 1786, showcases a fascinating array of moths found in the natural world. The image includes six different species, each displayed with remarkable detail and accuracy. In the foreground, the Spotted Clover Moth, Schinia scutosa (1 and 2), is depicted with its distinctive orange and black wings adorned with small white spots. The Guernsey Underwing, Epilecta linogrisea (3), is illustrated in its pupa stage, with its intricately patterned exterior hinting at the beautiful moth it will become. Moving on to the moths in the middle ground, the first is the Straw Underwing, Thalpophila matura (5 and 6), which boasts a unique, shimmering silver and green appearance. The second moth is the Burnished Brass, Diachrysia chrysitis (not visible in the image), known for its vibrant orange and black wings with gold-edged markings. The remaining two moths are the Green Spangled Shark, Cucullia argentea (4), and the Spangled Mottled Underwing, Polyphaenis sericata. The former is characterized by its green wings with silver spots, while the latter features a striking pattern of brown and white markings on its wings. This engraving not only showcases the breathtaking beauty of these moths but also highlights the intricate detail and artistry of 18th-century scientific illustration. The metamorphosis from caterpillar to pupa to adult moth is a testament to the wonders of nature, and this engraving serves as a window into the natural world of over 200 years ago.
