EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 17th-century painting, titled "Saint Jerome," is a masterpiece by the renowned Spanish Baroque artist Jusepe de Ribera, created in 1646. The artwork is currently housed in the National Gallery in Prague, Czech Republic. Saint Jerome, depicted in the painting, is shown as an elderly hermit, clad in a cloak, seated against a rocky backdrop. He is deeply engrossed in his studies, with several books and scrolls spread around him. The saint's face, etched with lines of age and wisdom, is illuminated by the soft glow of the setting sun, while the shadows cast by the rocky terrain create a dramatic contrast, a technique known as chiaroscuro. Saint Jerome, a prominent figure in Christian tradition, is known for his translation of the Bible from Hebrew and Greek into Latin, the Vulgate. He is often depicted with a cardinal's hat, symbolizing his role as a Doctor of the Church, and a skull, representing the transience of worldly pleasures and the inevitability of death. In this painting, however, Ribera chose to depict Jerome without the hat and with a long, flowing beard, which was a common representation of asceticism and holiness in the Baroque period. The rich colors, particularly the deep purples and reds, add to the painting's overall grandeur and make it a standout piece in the National Gallery's collection.
