EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Galen, the influential Greek physician and anatomist who left an indelible mark on Western medicine for over 1500 years. Born and educated in Pergamum (now Turkey), Galen's thirst for knowledge led him to study in Smyrna, Corinth, and Alexandria. Fascinated by the human body, he even served as a physician to gladiators in his hometown. In 161 AD, Galen embarked on a journey to Rome where he eventually became the personal doctor of Emperor Marcus Aurelius in 164 AD. Throughout his illustrious career, Galen penned more than 100 books that heavily relied on the teachings of Hippocrates. His groundbreaking theories encompassed concepts such as the four humours and the threefold circulation of blood. Despite societal taboos against human dissection at that time, Galen made significant contributions to anatomy through dissecting domestic animals. It was during these explorations that he discovered the pulse as a diagnostic aid – a breakthrough that revolutionized medical practice. This remarkable portrait not only immortalizes Galen's intellectual prowess but also serves as a testament to his enduring legacy within the history of medicine. As we gaze upon this image captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of how one individual can shape an entire field with their dedication and innovative ideas.
