Giordano Bruno, Italian philosopher

Giordano Bruno (1548-1600), Italian philosopher. Bruno was a supporter of the Copernican view that the Earth revolved around the Sun. He also went beyond this to propose the infinity of space and the multiplicity of worlds. He was a member of the Dominican Order but left in 1576 to travel widely in Europe and air his radical views. He was arrested by the Inquisition in 1592 and, on refusing to recant his unorthodox theories, was burned alive at the stake. This statue of Bruno was erected in 1889 in the Campo Dei Fiori in Rome, Italy, to mark the place where he was burned

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the statue of Giordano Bruno, an influential Italian philosopher who lived during the 16th century. Bruno's beliefs challenged the prevailing religious and scientific views of his time. He ardently supported Copernicus' revolutionary idea that the Earth revolved around the Sun, but he took it a step further by proposing that space was infinite and filled with multiple worlds. Despite being a member of the Dominican Order initially, Bruno left in 1576 to embark on extensive travels across Europe, where he fearlessly expressed his radical ideas. However, his unorthodox theories eventually caught up with him when he was arrested by the Inquisition in 1592. Refusing to recant his beliefs, Giordano Bruno met a tragic fate – he was burned alive at the stake for heresy. To commemorate this courageous thinker and mark the place where this horrific event occurred, this striking statue was erected in Rome's Campo Dei Fiori in 1889. The sculpture captures Bruno's likeness as a priestly figure while symbolizing his significant contributions to cosmology and philosophy. It stands as a poignant reminder of both human resilience and historical struggles against dogma and persecution. Giordano Bruno's legacy lives on through this powerful image captured by Science Photo Library – an enduring testament to one man's unwavering pursuit of truth amidst adversity.
