Heart of stone

Heart of stone, computer artwork. The heart is a hollow sac (lower frame) of muscular tissue that pumps blood around the body. Small surface coronary blood vessels supply the heart muscle with blood. Four major blood vessels (upper frame) bring blood to and from the heart. From upper left to centre right they are: the vena cava (vein returning deoxygenated blood from the body); the aorta (artery through which oxygenated blood is pumped to the body); the pulmonary artery (taking deoxygenated blood to the lungs); and the pulmonary vein (bringing oxygenated blood from the lungs). People lacking feelings are said to have a heart of stone. See P216/387 for a heart of gold

EDITORS COMMENTS
This computer artwork titled "Heart of Stone" beautifully captures the intricate anatomy and functionality of the human heart. The image showcases a hollow sac made of muscular tissue, symbolizing the heart's role as a powerful pump that circulates blood throughout our bodies. The lower frame highlights small surface coronary blood vessels responsible for supplying oxygenated blood to the heart muscle. In contrast, the upper frame depicts four major blood vessels: vena cava, aorta, pulmonary artery, and pulmonary vein. The concept behind this artwork draws attention to individuals who are often described as having a "heart of stone" lacking emotions or sensitivity. It juxtaposes the coldness associated with stone against the warmth and vitality normally attributed to this vital organ. By exploring both physical and emotional aspects, this thought-provoking illustration encourages contemplation on what it means to be unfeeling or insensitive. Through its use of granite-like textures and detailed rendering, this computer-generated artwork from Science Photo Library offers viewers an opportunity to appreciate not only the complexity but also the beauty found within our cardiovascular system. Whether contemplating scientific concepts or pondering deeper meanings about human nature, "Heart of Stone" invites us into a realm where art meets science in perfect harmony.
