Refraction and total internal reflection C017 / 7124
Refraction and total internal reflection. Computer artwork showing several beams of light originating inside an optically dense medium (blue). A less dense medium (black) is above). The leftmost ray strikes the interface between the two media at a right angle and continues upwards undeflected. The next ray strikes at a narrow angle is refracted (bent), with some internal reflection. The third ray hits with a larger angle and is mostly reflected back, with a some refraction. The last ray strikes at an angle greater than the critical angle and is reflected back into the original medium, this is total internal reflection

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Refraction and Total Internal Reflection" showcases the mesmerizing phenomenon of light bending and reflecting at the interface between two different mediums. Created using computer artwork, this illustration beautifully captures several beams of light originating within an optically dense medium depicted in blue, while a less dense medium is shown in black above. The leftmost ray serves as our reference point, striking the interface at a right angle and continuing its upward path undisturbed. However, as we move towards the other rays, we witness their interaction with the boundary between these media. The next ray encounters the interface at a narrow angle and undergoes refraction or bending along with some internal reflection. The third ray hits at a larger angle resulting in mostly reflection but also some refraction. The most intriguing part comes when observing the last ray which strikes at an angle greater than what is known as the critical angle. This causes total internal reflection where all of its energy is reflected back into its original medium rather than passing through to another side. Through this visually stunning artwork by Russell Kightley from Science Photo Library, viewers are able to appreciate how light behaves when encountering different mediums and angles. It serves as a reminder of how intricate and fascinating physics can be when exploring concepts like refraction, total internal reflection, refractive index, and more within optics.
