EDITORS COMMENTS
Corona Australis, or the Southern Crown, is a constellation located in the Southern Celestial Hemisphere. This engraving of the constellation, titled "De Stelle Fisse" or "Of Fixed Stars," was created by the Italian humanist Alessandro Piccolomini in 1559. Piccolomini was a scholar, philosopher, and astronomer who made significant contributions to the study of the stars and the constellations. The image shows Corona Australis as it appeared in the night sky during the 16th century. The constellation is depicted with its distinctive crown shape, which is formed by the stars Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, Zeta, and Eta. These stars are represented as small circles with crosses, indicating their fixed nature. The engraving was produced in Venice, Italy, and is a testament to the European fascination with the stars and the heavens during the Renaissance period. The intricate design and attention to detail in the image reflect the advanced observational and scientific techniques of the time. Piccolomini's work was part of a larger tradition of star mapping and constellation identification that began with the ancient Greeks and Romans. By the 16th century, European astronomers had expanded the known constellations and refined the boundaries of existing ones. Piccolomini's contribution to this endeavor was significant, and his work continues to be studied and appreciated by astronomers and historians today.
