This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Orycteropus afer 1. Oritteropo del Capo di Buona Speranza" and "Priodontes maximus 2. Priodonte gigante" (Aardvark and Giant Armadillo), is an exquisite example of 19th-century natural science illustration. Created in Florence, Italy, in 1837, this illustration was published by Batelli e Figli and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is considered one of the greatest French illustrators of his time, known for his meticulous attention to detail and ability to capture the natural world with exceptional accuracy. The image features two fascinating mammals from the order Cingulata: the Aardvark (Orycteropus afer) and the Giant Armadillo (Priodontes maximus). The Aardvark, also known as the Cape Anteater or Orycteropus, is a nocturnal, burrowing animal native to Africa. The Giant Armadillo, on the other hand, is the largest living armadillo species, found primarily in South America.
