This hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's "Bilderbuch fur Kinder" (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1802, showcases a vibrant collection of exotic Chinese insects. The engraving features six distinct species, each showcasing their unique beauty and intricacy. At the center, the Milkweed Locust, Phymateus morbillosus morbillosus, can be seen perched on a milkweed leaf. Its long, slender body and distinctive hind legs are adorned with a striking pattern of spots. Next to it, two exquisite Jewel Beetles, Chrysochroa vittata and Chrysochroa ocellata, display their iridescent exoskeletons.
