We ve heard of ferrets going down holes after rabbits

We ve heard of ferrets going down holes after rabbits, but this is the first time we ve seen a man go down a hole after a ferret. RSPCA Inspector Dick Lee, of Ilford, was off duty when he had a telephone call to rescue " Freddy", who had fallen into a man hole at the side of the underground railway lines at Upney Station, Barking. While trains rattled by, Mr Lee climbed into the hole, and is pictured here holding " Freddy" after the rescue.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from the 1960s, we witness a truly extraordinary sight. While it is not uncommon to hear of ferrets chasing rabbits down holes, it is certainly a rarity to see a man willingly venture into one after a mischievous ferret named Freddy. RSPCA Inspector Dick Lee, who happened to be off duty at the time, received an urgent phone call about Freddy's predicament in Upney Station, Barking. Undeterred by the passing trains and with his determination unwavering, Mr. Lee fearlessly descended into the depths of the manhole. The image captured here immortalizes that brave moment when he emerged triumphantly holding Freddy in his hands after successfully rescuing him. The photograph exudes both humor and admiration for this elderly pensioner's audacious act of heroism. It serves as a reminder that compassion knows no boundaries or limitations when it comes to saving our furry friends in need. As we delve into this snapshot from memory lane, we are transported back to an era where acts of kindness towards animals were celebrated and cherished. This timeless image encapsulates not only the bond between humans and animals but also showcases how even ordinary individuals can become unsung heroes in unexpected circumstances.
