EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the bustling activity at the construction site of Coventry Railway Station in 1959. The image showcases the meticulous preparations being made for the upcoming reconstruction, specifically highlighting the parcel depot. In the foreground, we see the concrete outlines of one of three sidings, symbolizing progress and modernization. On the right side, stands a sturdy concrete entrance that will serve as both a station passenger entrance during warehouse construction and an emblematic gateway to future transportation advancements. The transformation underway is evident from what has already been accomplished - property near the station entrance has been demolished, making way for new developments. To prepare this site alone, over 3,500 cubic yards of sandstone rock and more than 1,000 cubic yards of soft sandstone have been removed. Notably mentioned are McKeand Smith and Co. Ltd. , contractors entrusted with this monumental task from Wolverhampton. Their attention to detail is astonishing as they strive for precision by laying concrete with an accuracy down to one-sixteenth of an inch. Transport enthusiasts and history buffs alike will appreciate this snapshot frozen in time - a testament to progress unfolding before our eyes. It serves as a reminder that even amidst destruction and rebuilding lies hope for improved infrastructure and enhanced connectivity within Coventry's railway system.
