Oriental Seated, c1740s, (1928). Man seated, wearing a turban and large cloak, chalk on paper. At one time known to have been in the collection Dr Hans Wendland, Lugano, Switzerland. Study for a figure in The Crucifixion, owned by the Saint Louis Art Museum, Missouri, USA. Italian Venetian painter and printmaker Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696-1770), worked not only in Italy, but also in Germany and Spain. He was commissioned to carry out frescoes in churches and palaces, and was elected President of the Academy of Padua. As well as his large-scale majestic works, he also produced etchings and oil paintings, and is widely regarded as one of the most important artists of the period. This print captures the artwork "Oriental Seated" by Italian Venetian painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. Created in the 1740s, this chalk on paper drawing depicts a man seated, wearing a turban and large cloak. The artwork was originally part of Dr Hans Wendland's collection in Lugano, Switzerland. Tiepolo is renowned for his grand frescoes found in churches and palaces across Italy, Germany, and Spain. He was also elected President of the Academy of Padua during his career. In addition to his monumental works, Tiepolo produced etchings and oil paintings that showcased his immense talent. This particular drawing served as a study for one of the figures in Tiepolo's famous painting "The Crucifixion" which is currently owned by the Saint Louis Art Museum in Missouri, USA. The print is featured in Volume II of "The Drawings of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo" by Detlev Baron Von Hadeln.
