EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Johann Carl Bock for Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers' Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur (Butterflies Represented in Images According to Nature), published in Erlangen in 1786, showcases an intriguing assembly of discrete chaperon and tiger moths. The image includes five distinct species: Cymbalophora pudica, or the Discrete Chaperon, depicted in the center with its wings spread wide; Watsonarctia deserta, or the Desert Arctia, to the left; Atlantarctia tigrina, or the Tiger Arctia, to the right; Chelis maculosa, or the Spotted Wave, at the bottom left; and Phalaena pudica, or the Naked-bodied Phalaena, at the bottom right. The Discrete Chaperon moth is named for its unique, hooded appearance, which resembles a monk's cowl or a hooded cloak. The Tiger Moths, as represented here, display the distinctive striped patterns for which they are known. The Arctia species, such as the Desert Arctia, are often referred to as "waved" or "wavy-lined" moths due to the undulating lines on their wings. The Spotted Wave moth, Chelis maculosa, is characterized by its prominent, irregular spots. Lastly, the Naked-bodied Phalaena is named for its exposed abdomen, which is not covered by scales like most moths. This engraving offers a glimpse into the intricacies of the natural world and the meticulous work of 18th-century entomology. The detailed illustration of these moths in various stages of their life cycles, from larva to pupa to adult, highlights the fascinating process of metamorphosis and the beauty of these enchanting insects.
