EDITORS COMMENTS
Anderson Special N5541N, also known as "Ace of Diamonds, Beetle Bomb," is a legendary formula one racer that graced the skies from 1948 to 1953. Designed and built by Alvin E. Anderson of the Anderson Propeller Company in Elmhurst, Illinois, this innovative aircraft boasted a unique diamond-shaped fuselage cross-section. Powered by an 85hp Continental C85 engine, N5541N made its racing debut in 1948 with Bruce Raymond at the controls. The plane's distinctive appearance, with its pointed wings and streamlined body, quickly turned heads in the racing community. In 1949, the design was further refined, transitioning from a low-wing to a mid-wing configuration. The Anderson Special's racing career was cut short in 1950 when it crashed during a race. However, its legacy lived on as the wings from the wreckage were salvaged and used in the construction of the 1953 Pitts "Yellow Jacket," another iconic aircraft. This photograph captures the essence of the Anderson Special N5541N in its prime, embodying the spirit of innovation and determination that defined the golden age of formula one racing. With its sleek design and powerful engine, this aircraft continues to inspire awe and admiration among aviation enthusiasts and historians alike.
