EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork by the renowned Dutch naturalist artist JG Keulemans, featured in Sir Walter Lawry Buller's "A History of the Birds of New Zealand," Vol.2, showcases the Swamp Harrier Kahu (Circus approximans) in both its young and adult forms. The Swamp Harrier is a native bird of prey endemic to New Zealand and is a member of the Accipitridae family within the order Accipitriformes. This bird of prey is characterized by its distinctive rufous-brown plumage, broad wings, and long, powerful legs. The young Swamp Harrier, depicted on the left, displays a speckled brown and white plumage, which provides excellent camouflage as it learns to hunt and fly from its parents. In contrast, the adult Swamp Harrier, illustrated on the right, exhibits the more familiar rufous-brown coloration with black wingtips and a white ruff around its neck. Swamp Harriers are versatile hunters and can be found in various habitats, including wetlands, grasslands, and forests. They primarily feed on small mammals, birds, and reptiles, using their keen eyesight and agility to locate and capture their prey. The Swamp Harrier is an essential part of New Zealand's biodiversity and is celebrated for its role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. This stunning watercolor painting, created in 1888, is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and artistic mastery of JG Keulemans. It provides a glimpse into the natural history of New Zealand and the unique avian species that inhabit this beautiful country.
