Penicillin G molecule

Penicillin G. Computer model of a molecule of the antibiotic drug penicillin G, also known as benzylpenicillin (formula: C16.H18.N2.O4.S). The atoms are shown as spheres and are colour-coded: carbon (green), hydrogen (white), nitrogen (blue), oxygen (red) and sulphur (yellow). This was the first penicillin that Alexander Fleming isolated from the mould Penicillium chrysogenum in 1940. Most penicillin today is synthetic. Penicillin G is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat many bacterial infections including pneumonia, tonsillitis, syphilis and meningococcal meningitis

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a computer-generated model of the Penicillin G molecule, also known as benzylpenicillin. The intricate structure is depicted with vibrant spheres representing different atoms, color-coded to aid understanding: green for carbon, white for hydrogen, blue for nitrogen, red for oxygen, and yellow for sulfur. This particular penicillin variant was first isolated by Alexander Fleming in 1940 from the Penicillium chrysogenum mold. Penicillin G holds immense significance in medical history as it revolutionized the treatment of bacterial infections. As a broad-spectrum antibiotic, it effectively combats various ailments such as pneumonia, tonsillitis, syphilis, and meningococcal meningitis. Although most penicillin used today is synthetic rather than derived from natural sources like molds or fungi. The image not only highlights the molecular beauty of this life-saving drug but also serves as a reminder of its profound impact on healthcare worldwide. With its complex composition and precise arrangement of atoms within each sphere-like representation, this artwork exemplifies the intersection between chemistry and medicine. Through advancements in pharmacology and biochemistry over time since its discovery in 1940 by Alexander Fleming - an achievement that earned him a Nobel Prize - penicillin G has become one of humanity's greatest weapons against bacterial infections. Its enduring legacy continues to save countless lives every day.
