EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate "Plan of Bremenium, 1902". Bremenium, an ancient Roman fort located in Rochester, Northumberland, England, served as a crucial defensive structure along Dere Street. Unlike other forts that were positioned closer to Hadrian's Wall, Bremenium stood far north on this strategic Roman road connecting York to Corbridge and onwards to Melrose. The detailed floor plan depicted in this monochrome image offers a glimpse into the architectural brilliance of Roman Britain during the 2nd century. The print captures the essence of this historic site with its well-preserved fortification and carefully laid out buildings within its boundaries. Published in "Social England" by H. D. Traill and J. S. Mann in 1902, this visual representation takes us back to a time when Britannia was under Roman rule. It serves as both a valuable historical document and an artistic portrayal of one of England's significant archaeological sites. As we explore every lane and avenue on this map-like illustration, we can't help but appreciate the meticulous craftsmanship employed by Cassell & Company Ltd. , who produced this remarkable piece of literature over a century ago. This print from The Print Collector collection allows us to immerse ourselves in the rich heritage of Bremenium while also highlighting its importance within the context of Roman history.
