EDITORS COMMENTS
King George I of England, the first Hanoverian monarch of Britain, is depicted in this handcoloured steel engraving as he prepares to embark on a fateful journey in his royal coach on the night of his death, 22 June 1727. The elderly monarch, dressed in his ermine robes, crown, and wig, holds the orb and sceptre as six liveried servants hang on to the rear of the carriage for support. The horse, an old nag, appears unenthusiastic about the journey. The scene is reminiscent of the English gentleman taking a leisurely ride, but the mood is tinged with a sense of rejection and finality. The illustration is taken from "A Comic History of England" by Gilbert Abbott A Beckett, published by Bradbury, Agnew & Co. in London in 1880. It was produced by the renowned illustrator John Leech, with assistance from Robert Smith, Surtees, Plain, and Ringlets. The Victorian era caricature, with its comical and humorous elements, offers a unique perspective on the historical event. The image captures the essence of the old king's regal attire and the grandeur of the royal coach, while also highlighting the human element of the scene with the horse's apparent reluctance to move. The bunting and other decorative elements add to the festive atmosphere, creating a visual contrast to the underlying sense of finality. Overall, this engraving provides a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a humorous and engaging interpretation of a significant historical moment.
